I started to draw
about the same time I started to walk and talk. The director of the
day care was amazed of the life-like images of animals I drew. But
studying and making real art have begun in the elite and competitive Art University in
Moscow.
During
my
second year at the university (1977), the bronze medallion
"Albrecht Durer" I created was chosen as one of the exhibited pieces in
Moscow by the judges of Soviet Union Art Union. As this was
considered to be the highest ranking of the country, it granted me instant fame. Since then, for over 10 years,
my work has always been accepted in the top rankings of national art competitions,
a record upheld only by well-known artists. Some of my work were also
chosen to be exhibited in other European countries.
After
the collapse of the Soviet Union, I moved to Seattle in 1994 in search for
new opportunities. My experience with
a new culture inspired me to research using the language of art
to explain changes in modern history. The result is
"On the Scale of Eternity", a book about the
relationships and contradictions between Russian and European
cultures between 15th and 19th century. I am currently working on
the last draft of my second book "Spirit and Politics".
When I'm not
writing, I continue to teach, and create sculptures and paintings. |
